The origin of the storm of October 7–8 is uncertain although it was probably caused by the very large sunspot‐group in latitude 17° north, which was 60° east of the central meridian when the storm began. A chromospheric eruption of intensity 3 occurred at 18h 11m GMT, December 7, in a sunspot‐group 8° south of the equator and 10° west of the central meridian. At the same time a change occurred in the Earth's magnetic field at Mount Wilson similar to those which are usually caused by these eruptions. At 18h 11m GMT, H decreased 39 gammas in four minutes, recovering in the next 17 minutes.
