dc.description A two-dimensional variable grid finite-difference scheme was developed to analyze transient behavior of nearshore ice, in water and lake bottom soil, as a function of shore-bottom slope and environmental heat fluxes. It is implicit in the vertical direction and explicit in the horizontal direction, accommodates variable thermal diffusivities, and is designed for solution with a reduced expenditure of computer time. The stability criterion was developed; the consistency and convergence of the numerical method were proved; and the error, compared to existing analytical solutions, was < 1%. The results describe the formation, growth, and decay of ice in water and lake bottom soil as well as the transient temperature profiles and the magnitudes of all the heat fluxes during ice episodes. The result compare well with measured field data.
